When he painted it, Degas didn’t give it the dual name. He called it ‘Interior’ and asked his friend to take it to the national library. He took the painting but he signed one thing… ‘Have a look at a little carpet in the front of the bed, it’s shocking. The room is too lighted. Without any mysterious…’ The national library was the main establishment of cultural development, so everyone recognised the implication. They denied to buy it with name of public moral.
At last Degas named the painting true name ‘Rape’.

The Human in Love 
This is a really sinister picture, just the way the man is positioned paired with the lighting really represents the title. The contrast between the white dress of the girl and the black coat of the man add to this as well.
